Customer Review: POC AVIP Printed Light Jersey

Nolley1Cyclists love their equipment. We obsess endlessly over grams, technology, and the latest designs to “make us faster”. Beyond the bike, a considerable amount of attention is paid in the sport to “kit” which is generally aimed at looking good in case the previous goal of going fast comes up short.

Enter POC, a Swedish company that has put their efforts into researching safety on the road. For years they are involved in providing equipment for many “gravity” sports, but more recently they have entered the market for road cycling with some terrific products. This review is about their AVIP Light Jersey.

AVIP is an acronym for “ATTENTION, VISIBILITY, INTERACTION AND PROTECTION. The researchers at POC have utilized research in “perception, visibility, contrast, communication, psychology, digital technology and aerodynamics” to create a safer and more efficient jersey for road cycling. The AVIP jersey uses a color combination and pattern which maximizes visibility and enhances drivers early recognition of the cyclist presence. With the use of fluorescent colors and color combinations that are readily identified against the typical background a drivers awareness of a cyclist is increased from 120 meters to 670 meters, giving a greater distance for reaction and increasing safety significantly.

In addition to safety, POC has worked on improving the aerodynamics and breathability of their jersey. Using a “3D” fabric they have increased the movement of moisture away from the body to enhance breathability. The result is improved cooling on those hot summer days.

So what is the customer experience? One of the criteria I use for cycling apparel is; does it contribute to comfort and efficiency on the bike? The POC jersey disappears next to the skin and helps maintain a comfortable heat /moisture regulation without any unnecessary bulk or constriction. I like that! There is a noticeable cooling when moving that helps with those hot, muggy days we experience in Virginia summers. The jersey fits well with a distinct European race cut so size up accordingly. The benefits of being seen are the gold standard for cycling and is much more important than the billboard advertisement approach most manufacturers take. There is a full zipper which contributes to heat regulation and nicely appointed extras like the soft collar and soft elastic on the arm bands. The only thing I would change on the piece would be to enlarge the pockets slightly. Overall I like the look, feel, and function of this jersey. Check it out at VeloConcepts. Be SAFE and be COOL.
